WaterMarks
This series of paintings is inspired by the element of Water.
WaterMarks moves representation of spiritual and philosophical concepts away from figurative and symbolic representation towards abstract and minimalist aesthetics. Using colour, line, and composition to convey experience and understanding, and to provoke emotional response in the viewer.
In these paintings I do not seek to represent water itself, these are not landscape/seascape/riverscape paintings. Rather they are evocative of the experience and memory of water. These paintings are a meditative reflection on the power of place (physical, emotional, or psychological) and the elements to inspire transition or transformation.
Water is certainly present in the work, I’m using water based paints after all, but water is most frequently used as the means of creating marks on the surface of these paintings. Water is sprayed, splashed and dripped directly onto the ground layers while they are still wet.
