Quilted Forrest
The Quilted Forest series and an exploration of Place, Space, and Environment.
An exploration of themes of Identity, Place, and Purpose.
I am interested in exploring how we move into, through and inhabit space. How we navigate the physical environment. How we negotiate the elements of the environment. How we relate to space; owned, shared and unclaimed.
It is in the point of interaction between us and the spaces we claim or borrow where I find much inspiration. Working within formal Abstract, Non-objective, Brutalist and Reductionist concerns I engage in ongoing dialogue with concepts of edges, boundaries, environment and habitat.
I want to explore how we relate to our physical being in the environment, in where we draw boundaries.
Defining location. Claiming space. Marking Territory.
The work in the Quilted Forest series begins with a design laid out on a grid. The space is divided between blocked out areas of solid colour, usually black, and open areas of pattern, colour and texture. Together, they suggest built and natural environments respectively.
