EarthWorks
This series of paintings is inspired by the element of Earth.
Earth is the steadfast, the strong, the reliable. Earth is our home. Often taken for granted. Taken as a right. And sadly often exploited. I look for ways to find meaning and, purpose, and gratitude for the life sustaining power of the land. In Earthworks my interests in place, politics and esoteric philosophy meet. In this series I entertain and explore ideas around my personal identity, an Australian Identity and how these ideas and the physical landscape affect our sense of place.
These works exploit a limited palette taken form the rich earth colours of my beautiful Blue Mountains surrounds. Simple, clean lines speak of strength and deep history.
These works are not landscape paintings in a traditional, Western sense. Rather they are evocative of the experience of Earth. They explore our relationship with Earth, our dependence upon it, our estrangement from it.
These works are less about what is observed and more about what is experienced.
